Spalding Metal Racquet

Spalding Metal Tennis Racquet - 1932

1932 - Metal! What next? Tubular metal frames made their appearance in the 1920's, and by the 1930's they were being mass-produced. Unfortunately, they were rough on the poor woolen balls, as they would take the life and skin right out of the softly pressured balls of the time. However, they were durable and many surviving frames found today are intact with the original piano wire stringing. Leather grips were also now appearing on the new metal rackets, but the publics' love affair with wood endured.
