Collared Racquet

Collard Tennis Racquet, 1873

1878 - The decorative band around the neck of racquets in the early years of the game is a true indication of their rarity to collectors. Some of these racquets, like this one, were smaller in length and head size because they were part of four or more racquets included in a boxed set of lawn tennis equipment. This one dates from the late 1870's and is only 24 inches long. The solid concave wedge at the throat pre-dates the more commonly associated convex wedge of court tennis racquets, as well as those of the first tennis boom in the early 1880's.
